Beginner Level 2 - Overhead Pass
In Level 2, we will introduce the backset along with being more mindful of setting accuracy. When
teaching the backset, many young players will throw their hands back to the target. We want to
emphasize that the hands go to the ceiling. The ball will go back by using the legs to create sufficient
force to set the ball high, and by pushing the hips forward, the ball will go back.
We will also focus on multiple touches using the overhead set, i.e., overhead pass the first contact to
the setter, who will then overhead pass the ball to the left front or right front target. Competitive
games (1v1 or 2v2 using the overhead pass to put the ball over the net) are used to both have fun
and compete, but the primary intent is to develop ball control and "read" where the opponent is
attacking.
