eye, and with only that disaster immediately followed even though
he had no intent to hurt her emotionally, he was late only because
the lecture was longer than usual. Nevertheless, a devastating
punishment followed immediately because of the emotional hurt
he caused his wife. The Gaon Rabbi Chayim Shmuelevitz ZT”L
asked – Did his death save his wife from her hurt?! If not for his
punishment her husband would have merely returned home late, yet
now her husband was gone forever! The explanation is – Chazal
are teaching us a lesson that this is an uncompromising spiritual
law and that the punishment for emotional oppression even under
these inadvertent circumstances is immediate, no different than
anyone who violates a law of nature will be harmed. If someone
is standing near the edge of a river and is not careful and a strong
wind blows it will push him over into the water, so too this starkly
uncompromising spiritual law will devastate him for the emotional
oppression of his wife. 18 17 The Gaon Rabbi Chayim would often say
“An offense between one person and another is a fire that burns.”

18. There are certainly spiritual laws which if violated will vary in
consequence, as some will activate or prevent the occurrence of a
natural event. In this instance of Rav Rachumi, our Rock-Whose-
Actions-Are-Perfect-And-Just activated the consequence of the law in
great measure for violating this starkly uncompromising spiritual law
in response to the “emotional oppression” experienced by the Rav’s
wife; but this is not the place to elaborate on the topic.
