Doing Chessed with one’s physical actions. וֹפוּג ְבּ םי ִד ָס ֲח תוּלי ִמ ְגּ
ר ֵתּי םי ֶד ָס ֲח תוּלי ֶמ ְגּ ה ָלּד ְגּ םי ֶר ָב ְדּ ה ֶָלֹ ְֶ ֶבּ ,פ ָנ ָבּ ַר וּנָתּ"
“Our Rabbis have taught (in Gemara Sukkah, 49b) that extending
Chessed to others is greater than giving Tzedakah in three ways: פי ֵבּ ּפוּג ְבּ פי ֵבּ םי ֶד ָס ֲח תוּלי ֶמ ְגּ ,ּנּמ ָמ ְבּ ה ָר ָד ְצ ,ה ָר ָד ְצּ ַה פ ֶמ
Tzedakah is done with one’s money, Chessed is done with one’s
physical actions and with one’s money. Tzedakah is given to פי ֵבּ םיֶיּ ֶנ ֲע ָל פי ֵבּ םי ֶד ָס ֲח תוּלי ֶמ ְגּ ,םיֶיּ ֶנ ֲע ָל ה ָר ָד ְצ .ּנּמ ָמ ְבּ
the poor, Chessed is done to the poor and to the rich. Tzedakah פי ֵבּ םיֶיּ ַח ַל פי ֵבּ םי ֶד ָס ֲח תוּלי ֶמ ְגּ ,םיֶיּ ַח ַל ה ָר ָד ְצ .םי ֶרי ֶֶ ֲע ַל
is given to the living, Chessed is done to the living and to those
who are no longer living.” Everyone is in need of Chessed and - םי ֶד ָס ֲח תוּלי ֶמ ְג ֶל רוּר ָז ד ָח ִא ל ָכּ .]ב"ע ט"מ ה ָכּ ֻס[ "םי ֶת ֵמּ ַל
attention, and a smile. To do these things one does not have to ה ִז ,תי ֶׁ ְס ַכּ ה ָא ָצּה ְבּ ךְ ִרֹצ פי ֵא ךְ ָכּ ם ֵֶ ְל .ךְוּיּ ֶח ְל ,ב ֵל ת ַמוּשׂ ְת ֶל
spend any money; these things are done with one’s physical action. םי ֶבּ ַר הֹכּ םי ֶבוּיּ ֶח ְו תּבּ ַר הֹכּ תּיּ ֻר ֶָ ְפ ִא ךָ ְל פי ֵא .ּפוּג ְבּ הֹ ִש ֲע ַנ
A person will not find as many opportunities and obligations to
do this mitzvah of Chessed - either with one’s physical actions or י ֶפ ְכּ ,ּנּמ ָמ ְבּ פ ֵה ְו ּפוּג ְבּ פ ֵה ,םי ֶד ָס ֲח תוּלי ֶמ ְגּ ת ַו ְצ ֶמ םוּיּ ֶר ל ִֶ
with one’s money - as one can find in the relationship between a ּפוּג ְבּ ד ִס ִח לֹמ ְג ֶל ר ֶָ ְפ ִא פא ָכּ .ּתּ ְֶ ֶא ְל ֶי ֶא פי ֵבּ תֶי ַבּ ַבּ ֵֶיּ ִֶ
husband and wife. Here one can do Chessed literally with one’s
physical actions. Maran the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky י ֶמ ..." :ּב ָתּ ְכ ֶמ ְבּ ל" ַצ ַז י ֶר ְס ְבִי ְנ ַר י"ירגה פ ָר ָמ פֶּ ְל ה ִז ְו .ֶ ָמּ ַמ
ZT”L expressed this concept in his letter “…One who is sincerely ,תוּנ ָמ ְח ַר ד ַצּ ֶמוּ םֶי ַמ ֶָ ם ֵֶ ְל ה ִז ָבּ א ֵצּיּ ַכ ְו רוּבּ ֶח ְו בוּר ֵר הֹ ִשּע ִֶ
affectionate and embracing and the like for the sake of Heaven, and
because they are genuinely compassionate - that she should not feel ת ֶַ ָל ְח ַה ְל ל ָל ְכּ וּתּ ַאי ֶב ְמ ה ִז פי ֵא ,ה ָבוּל ֲע ַו ה ָבוּא ְכּ הִי ְה ֶתּ אלֹּ ִֶ
emotionally hurt or neglected - will not bring on a weakening in י ֵדי ֶל וּתּ ַאי ֶב ְמ ,א ָבּ ַר ְדּ ַא ,תּו ֲא ַת ְבּ ה ָלי ֶפ ְנ ֶל ְו םֶי ַמ ֶָ ת ַא ְרֶיּ ַה
Yirat Shamayim and cause him to fall into the pursuit of his desires,
in fact just the opposite, it brings one to Kedushah, and in so doing 'וי ָכ ָר ְד ֶבּ ָתּ ְכ ַל ָה ְו' ֶדּ א ָתְי ָרּא ְדּ הֹ ֵש ֲע ה ָו ְצ ֶמ ה ִז ָבּ םֵיּ ַר ְמוּ ,ה ָשּׁ ֻד ְר
he fulfills the Torah’s proactive mitzvah of “Going in His ways, just ד ִס ִח תוּלי ֶמ ְגּ י ֵדְי ל ַע ."םוּח ַר ה ָתּ ַא ף ַא ,םוּח ַר אוּה ה ָמ -
as He is compassionate so too should you be compassionate.” In
doing Chessed with one’s physical efforts a man elevates himself וי ָתּדּ ֶמ ְבּ ר ֵבּ ַדּ ֶה ְל ה ִכּז ְו ,ּחוּר ְבוּ ּפוּג ְבּ ם ָד ָא ָה ה ִלּ ַע ְת ֶמ ּפוּג ְבּ
both physically and spiritually, and merits to attach himself to the ה ָבי ֶט ֲח ַכּ ם ָד ָא ָה ת ִא םי ֶוּ ַה ְמ ַחוּר ְו ףוּגּ .אוּה ךְוּר ָבּ ֶּד ָקּ ַה ל ִֶ
attributes of HaKadosh Baruch Hu. This person’s body and soul
become one bonded entity, and the two of them must now work .ךְ ַר ָבּ ְתֶי 'ה ת ַדּב ֲע ַל ֶ ֵמּ ַתּ ְֶ ֶה ְל ךְי ֶר ָצ ד ַחַי ם ִהי ֵנ ְֶ ֶבוּ ,ת ַח ַא
