Part 1.
The home is a school to learn Chessed.
The home is the training ground to learn the human quality of
kindness, based on the rules of the Torah, with Tzedakah and
Chessed. “Whoever is a closer relative takes precedence,” as the
Gemara Babba Metziah states (71a) “The poor of your city and the
poor of some other city, the poor of your city come first.” A poor
man who is related, and one who is not related, the one related takes
precedence, as it says (Yeshaya 58:7) “Do not hide yourself from
the needs of your family.” There is no closer relative to a husband
than his wife – as his wife is a part of his own body - therefore
the imperative to do Chessed to her is even more compelling. On
occasion we see a strange anomaly. A man who does much kindness
at great self-sacrifice extending Chessed to anyone who asks him
for help, yet his wife is full of complaints against him - Why doesn’t
she see this “great” giver of kindness doing Chessed with his own
family?! This man mistakenly thinks that the mitzvah of Chessed
is more important when Chessed is done for someone else, and he
does not understand that the main trait of Chessed must be looking
first to do Chessed to his wife.
