The Torah is certainly not describing to us the emotional meeting
between a grandfather and his grandsons before his passing, that
he hugged them and kissed them. Rather, everything said here is
an integral part of the topic of Berachot. This is how the Sforno
explains it “And he kissed them and he hugged them” – in order
that his soul would bond to their souls and his Berachot would be
effective.” The Beracha originates from within the soul of the one
giving the blessing, and the more his soul is attached to the one who
is being blessed - the more the power of the Beracha is enhanced.
This is what the Sforno says regarding the blessing given by
Lavan to his daughters (Beresheet 32:1) “To instruct us that the
Beracha of a father to his child which is given with all of his soul is
without any doubt more fitting to be effective.” However, one must
understand why it was necessary for Yaakov to kiss and hug his
grandsons in order for his soul to attach itself to theirs, since despite
the fact that “his eyes were ‘heavy’ from old age and he could not
see,” Yaakov possessed a spiritual sight that was bright and clear.
He saw standing before him not the physical bodies of Ephraim
and Menashe, rather, he saw the souls of his two grandsons and
the generations that would descend from them. Yaakov saw that
Yehoshuah would come from Efrayim. He saw Yerovam and Yehu.
He saw standing before him the tribes of Israel and their futures,
and he blessed them. That being so, what more did his kissing
and hugging their physical bodies add to the strengthening of his
connection to their souls in order that his Beracha would be even
more effective?!
