GUIDELINES OF FIAP
1. TO THE ORGANIZERS OF EXHIBITIONS
In a photographic exhibition, the artistic and photographic quality of the works presented to the visitors
for evaluation of is very important.
As we wish that photography should get the same recognition as the other artistic expressions, we must
guarantee the utmost prestige for the display. For this purpose, regular frames should be used, and the
pictures should be exhibited under glass and with uniform mounts.
These guidelines are superfluous for some organizers, because they are complying with them for many
years; for others it is an aim to fulfil.
The favourable feeling given by an adequate venue, by photographically-suitable lighting, by frames
well spaced and hung in one row, predispose the visitor for a better look at the pictures and for a better
opinion of the works. A work presented this way assumes a greater importance and seems better in
quality; badly presented it is weakened.
When it concerns a salon, the organizer can ask the entrants to send their prints without any mount or
any kind of strengthening. The organizers have then to supply the adequate mounts for the exhibition.
The reduced weight of the return packages can counterbalance the extra expenses for the buying of
frames, which fortunately can be used for a long time if they are well treated.
The fact of asking for prints free of any mount and of any adhesive makes the reproduction for a
catalogue also easier, because the modern systems of reproduction requires that the print be wound
without any difficulty around a cylinder.
It is our common aim to give to our photographic works a presentation similar to those used by the
museums and the art galleries.
A heaping of pictures and a failing presentation deprives the photography of the artistic considerations
we should guarantee it.
Let us join our efforts for giving to the photographic art the same recognition and the same allure as for
the other expressions of arts.
2. TO THE ORGANIZERS OF INTERNATIONAL SALONS
In the FIAP documents 294 and 296 (MFIAP distinction and FIAP Biennials) a coherence is required
"as well for the inspiration and the conception as for the realisation and the presentation".
One can establish that the portfolio of an applicant for the MFIAP distinction and the collections of a
country have more chances for success if these aspects have been taken into account, because the artistic
