“Thanksgiving is a time to give, to love, and to reflect on the things that matter most in life” ~ Daniel Duckey
My fellow Lions and Leos,
It’s my pleasure to join with you as we continue our Lion’s journey in service. In this month we recognize special observances like
National Diabetes month, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Each provides an opportunity for expanded service within our
community. On November 6 , we sponsored a community “Walk and Zumba Stretch” in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, a
th
clothing drive to support our veterans, and several clubs distributed turkeys and related fixings to disadvantaged members of the
community.
A number of Lions and Leos recently participated in one of three district environmental initiatives involving horticulture and
gardening. We anticipate expanded involvement in cleaning and enhancing the quality of our community parks and other public
spaces. Many clubs continue the fight against hunger throughout the year, providing food to pantries and related facilities across
both boroughs. District 20-K1 sponsored a successful food delivery project to disadvantaged men from the Brooklyn Armory.
As we review the key focus areas of Lions Clubs International, we are proud of our progress in Membership, Leadership, Service,
and LCIF. MyLion data indicates positive growth in district membership. Since our last newsletter we welcomed a new club the
“Queens Elite” Lions Club, based in South Ozone Park, NY. Additions to our membership allow expanded service as “more hands
make lighter work overall .” In line with this growth, we find evolving opportunities for robust service. We must continue to ask
ourselves “what can I / we do to help address the needs of our community?”
Under leadership activity, more Lions are learning about the vast offerings of the Lions Learning Center and taking advantage of
this opportunity. We acknowledge and celebrate our recent graduates of the New York State and Bermuda Leadership Institute
(October 25, 2021). Their achievements and participation will serve to strengthen the capabilities of our clubs and district. Other
specialized training options provided to District Lions include courses on Microsoft WORD, Excel, and PowerPoint. Training in the
application of Zoom will be followed by classes to develop expertise with Smart Phones. Additional MyLion training is planned.
This continued personal development will further enhance members’ skills and ability to function and serve efficiently in a rapidly
evolving digital landscape.
As the adverse restrictions brought about by Covid-19 gradually recede, we expect to provide vision screening services to children
in early childhood classes where and when it is considered safe to do so.
In this pre-holiday season, it is important to continue to observe safety protocols (including masking to the extent possible). Our
good health is vital and necessary in order to help those among us who are in need.
Wishing you the best for the holidays!

District Governor, 20-K1
