At the beginning of my LEO journey, I didn’t realize how much volunteerism could motivate others and bring
       hope for a better future.
My mom was persistent and encouraged me. Gradually, I began to understand the true meaning of being a
LEO. The word LEO stands for LEADERSHIP, EXPERIENCE and OPPORTUNITY. As I started to participate in
service projects and International Conventions, I was able to see the needs of the less fortunate and compare
       them with my life.
At the Chicago Convention, I was moved to tears by my experience at Clara's House. I thought that this trip
would simply be “a get away from home.” I never expected to walk away feeling so fulfilled, just by knowing that
Metropolis Lions and Leos do truly change lives. As Lions and Leos, we give our all to each project, expecting
nothing in return. It's one thing to hear stories of life changing experiences. But when you experience how you
too, can change someone's life by simply volunteering in response to a need, it makes a big impact. Now, I look
at the Conventions as a reward to me for service well done. Japan for example will forever be a memorable
experience. Although we didn't speak the language, love transcended what words could not speak.
One of my biggest achievements was my appointment as the Leo District Photographer, under the leadership of
Past District Governor Audrey Doorn. This opportunity presented a different experience and exposure. Through
the lens of my camera, I captured “service in action”. A picture is worth countless words, and each tells a story.
As I matured, I understood the seriousness and important reasons for being a part of this organization. The
                              ,
slogan, "Bridging the Gap" allowed me to feel the link between being a Leo and developing the knowledge and
       responsibility of a Lion.
Above all, I am grateful for the support of a village called Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club and the leadership
resources from Lions Clubs International I have been mentored by the guidance of many ‘aunts and uncles’ who
have become my family circle. For that I say, “thank you.” To quote my mom, ‘service is a verb’ .
The past year and a half was one for the history books. Lions and Leos like my mom continued to serve our
community, ensuring safety for herself and others. It was different and scary yet fulfilling to know that when
situations seemed impossible, Metropolis Leos and Lions rolled up their sleeves and worked even harder to
support front line workers and families in crisis. Most importantly I know and see how I can help change the
world with one act of kindness at a time. I delivered meals and food boxes to Senior Living Residences,
collected suit-cases for foster care children, did grocery shopping or prescription pickups for the elderly. Then I
had the esteemed honor of working alongside our first Black International President Douglas X Alexander. He
has been that inspirational leader to me. He taught me the qualities of leadership and never giving up on what
can be accomplished. I know that I can reach my full potential as a young black man in today’s crazy society.
In conclusion, I will continue to serve proudly as a LEO while I attend College and one day become a Lion. It's
       life changing.
       Respectfully submitted by
       Leo Kemani Hamilton,
       Brooklyn Metropolis Leo Club
