CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY
at
WEST INDIAN AMERICAN LABOR DAY PARADE
Lions from Brooklyn and Queens participated in the 56 annual celebration that
th
marks the end of summer. This year’s theme was “World Stage,” a tribute to the
recently proclaimed “World Steelpan Day” by the United Nations on August 11,
2023. The steelpan is a percussion instrument that originated in Trinidad and
Tobago. The music is acclaimed and enjoyed in countries across the globe.
It was a delight to see DG Antonio Robles as he led the contingent of Lions
wearing the bright yellow vests, walking, dancing and “chippin” down the 18
blocks of the parade route on Eastern Parkway, carrying flags of the different
Caribbean nations. The District’s banner was proudly carried by our District
Governor’s daughter Raenelle Robles and his grandson Josh Robles.
At the end of route, the Lions were treated with refreshments by Lion Ormond
Brathwaite, (Chairperson) and his hospitality team, Lions Jerusha Jacobs (Central
Brooklyn), Geraldine Kingston (New Lots) and Rosanna Brathwaite (Kings County).
Participating clubs included Brooklyn Alpha, Bedford Stuyvesant, Caribe, Central
Brooklyn, Crown Heights, East New York, Brooklyn Jefferson, Kings County,
Leaders, Metropolis, Mid Bedford, Midwood, New Horizon, New Lots, Outreach,
Prospect Heights, Hollis, Queens Buddha, Queens United, Rego Park – Forest
Hills, Richmond Hills South Ozone Park, St. Albans and Ann Sullivan – White
Plains.
The event was broadcast on various media platforms, including ABC-7 News, FOX
