“Helping Hands Chairperson: Lion Sandra Watson-Ralph
Touching You
Touching Me” BROOKLYN CROWN HEIGHTS: SERVING ACROSS THE ATLANTIC
Lions Yolande Cadore and Jennifer Parsons (Brooklyn Crown Heights Lions Club ) participated
in a joint venture with Hands Across The World, a Brooklyn-based organization for more than
20 years. Lion Yolande has been a member for five years and recently recruited Lion
Jennifer. While in Ghana, West Africa, (August 15-22, 2022) they served at Victoria St. Clair
Academy, a school in Accra, named after the founder and CEO of the Organization and at
Shepherd Light Academy.
Upon their arrival in Ghana, they were greeted at the airport by some of the students and
teachers. During their visits, they were warmly welcomed with an awesome, entertaining
performance by the students. Prior to the trip, four barrels containing school supplies,
educational toys, hand sanitizers, face masks, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, toiletries and
clothing, were shipped to the schools. Contributors included Lions Yolande Cadore, Jennifer
Parsons, Sandrina Kingston (Brooklyn Crown Heights ) and members of Hands Across The
Lion Yolande distributing snacks to the children World Organization. As the items were distributed, there were so many smiling faces and
of Victoria St. Clair Academy audible expressions of gratitude “Thank you”…….”God Bless you”……….”We love you!”
It must be noted that Lion Yolande has been a sponsor and pays the tuition for three (3)
students at Victoria St. Clair Academy and one (1) at Shepherd Light Academy. She was
honored with a Certificate of Appreciation by Victoria St. Clair Academy and the entire group
was presented with Kente Cloth by Shepherd Light Academy. The Kente Cloth is more than
just a piece of fabric. Formerly, it was reserved for Asante royalty. The designs are powerful
cultural symbols that represent Ghana’s rich history and philosophy.
Shepherd Light Academy is progressing rapidly. Six years ago, the doors opened to only
six (6) students. Currently, there are 245 students and plans to add nine more classrooms.
Therefore, there are many students who need sponsors. During the visit, Lion Jennifer became
Lion Yolande distributing school supplies to a sponsor for two students at Shepherd Light Academy. Anyone interested in becoming a
the children of Shepherd Light Academy - Ghana sponsor, can contact Lion Yolande. The SERVICE performed by Lions Yolande and Jennifer in
Ghana, West Africa, demonstrates District Governor Ingrid Andrews-Campbell’s theme “Leading
Today For A Better Tomorrow”.
