THE FUTURE OF LIONISM STARTS HERE
ENGAGING YOUTH
TESTIMONIALS FROM LEOS
Though it was cold, “hands on” gardening was a meaningful experience, and I would
certainly do it again. Interacting with nature and growing our own edible crops breaks
the monotony of staring at a computer all day as a student. At the community garden, I
learned many tips from the Lions, about how to grow my own food from a home garden
as well as facts about the plants. I was very surprised that the beets were ready to be
eaten in two months. Prior to this, I thought that these crops would take at least half a
year to grow.
Service like this makes me want to continue being a Leo because of the welcoming
guidance from the Lions who expose me to life skills I otherwise would not have learned
until later on. For example, I can create my own garden and be prepared for a natural
disaster. Lions truly serve us Leos. I would like to improve and expand community
gardening. Perhaps we could garden in a larger area, as the current plot is a bit small
and thus too crowded for every Leo to be able to contribute equally to the experience of
gardening .
Leo Emelie Nguyen, District Leo President Flushing Central Leos Club
I enjoyed gardening. It was really calming. I found that gardening
is very therapeutic. Community gardening is a valuable service. It is
a reminder that as a Leo you could step outside of your comfort zone and
try something new.
What can make it better?
More community gardens, I think.
