Eye Contact

People consider eye as “the window of the soul” since it reflects honesty,
intelligence, manner, and mood of the speaker. Despite of various cultural
background of employing eye contact, it has been agreed that, the quickest way of
building communication with the audiences in public speaking is by looking at
them personally and pleasantly. Be sure that we can catch our audiences’ reaction
to our eye contact, whether they understand, alert or even dazzled by our
explanation.
The way speaker looks at the
audiences also need to follow some
sorts of rule. A blank stare is the worst
at all. A fierce and intimidating look
will surely frighten the audiences, as
well as gazing intensely at one side of
the audience while ignoring the rest
will annoy the audience (Lucas, 2012).

We should try to share the equal eye contact to the whole audience. For a
small group of audiences, it is acceptable to address one audience to another
briefly, while in a larger group, we can scan the audience to show our attention to
them. Whatever the size of audiences we have, just make it sure that our
confidence, earnestness, and conviction will convey our message significantly
(Lucas, 2012).
