Culture note
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is a list of monuments and
constructions that are a testament to the creativity and skill of human beings.
The list is featured in a work by Philo of Byzantium written in 225 BCE called
On The Seven Wonders and included the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging
Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Lighthouse of
Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the
Statue of Zeus at Olympia.
In 2007, a campaign was launched by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber and his
organisation New7Wonders to create a list for the modern day. Tens of millions
of people voted for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites built between 220 BCE
and 1931 with the final seven being: The Great Wall of China; Petra, Jordan; The
Colosseum in Rome, Italy; Chichen Itza, Mexico; Machu Picchu, Peru; The Taj
Mahal, India; Christ the Redeemer statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In recent years, other lists of seven have been created: New7Wonders of
Nature, New7Wonders Cities, Seven Wonders of the Underwater World, Seven
Wonders of the Industrial World and Seven Wonders of the Solar System.
