b. Read the dialogue between a nurse and a patient below. Pay attention to the expressions in bold.
Mr. Huda (65 years old male) is experiencing a back pain and has been hospitalized for 2 days.
Nurse Hasna : “Assalammu’alaikum. Good morning, Mr. Huda. I am Nurse Hasna. I know that you
have been in pain recently and I am here to help. Can you please tell me how you are
feeling now?”
Mr. Huda : “Wa’alaikumsalam. Morning, nurse. My back has been very much in pain. I barely can
move since it hurts a lot.”
Nurse Hasna : “I see. What makes it worse? What is the action you have done to reduce the pain?
Mr. Huda : I think the pain increases when I sit too long. I feel just a bit more comfortable when I
am lying down.”
Nurse Hasna : “Noted, Sir. Can you describe the pain?”
Mr. Huda : “It is a dull and constant ache. But it is sometimes sharp stabbing on my back.”
Nurse Hasna : “Can you please tell me where do you feel the pain?”
Mr. Huda : “I feel the worst pain in my lower back.”
Nurse Hasna : “Can you please rate your pain now in the scale of 1-10, Sir?”
Mr. Huda : “Sure. I could say it is a 5 or 6.”
Nurse Hasna : “Alright, Sir. When did the pain start?”
Mr. Huda : “It started 3 days ago when I moved too much because I helped my son to clean his
new house.”
Nurse Hasna : “I see. How does this pain affect your daily life, Sir?”
Mr. Huda : “Well, I can’t move and sleep comfortably in these last 3 days due to this back pain. I
am quite stressful because of it.”
Nurse Hasna : “I understand the discomfort you feel. Now, would you like to try some relaxation
method to reduce your pain?”
Mr. Huda : “Sure. Let’s try it now.”
Nurse Hasna : “Great. First, you may sit or lie down as long as you are comfortable. Then, take a
slow, deep breath through your nose. After that, take the air as much as you can and
hold it for a moment. Finally, slowly exhale through your mouth and try to release the
tension you feel. Let’s repeat for a few times until you feel more relaxed.”
Mr. Huda : “Ok, nurse. I feel much better even though the pain remains.”
Nurse Hasna : “You have done it very well. Deep breathing can make you relaxed and calm. Let us
do it again later to make you feel even better. Let’s pray that Allah will give you speed
recovery. Allahumma rabban nasi, adzhibil ba'sa isyfi antas syafi la syafiya illa anta
syifa'an la yughadiru saqaman. Is there anything else you need, Sir?”
Mr. Huda : “Amen. No, I think it is enough for now. Thank you, nurse”.
Nurse Hasna : “Anytime, Sir. I will leave you now but you can always let me know whenever you
need help. See you later, Sir. Assalammu’alaikum.”
Mr. Huda : “Wa’alaikumsalam. See you, Nurse.”
