Navigating Patient Health Assessments
Dealing with various Gordon’s functional health patterns
Work in pairs or small groups to formulate “Wh” questions and complete the dialogue using the specific
vocabulary words provided (a vocabulary can be used more than once). Each scenario is based on Gordon’s
Functional Health Patterns. After discussing with your partner or group, share your constructed questions
and answers with the class for feedback.

Scenario 1: Health Perception and Health Management Pattern
Background:
A 55-year-old patient, Mr. Rashid, visits the clinic complaining of fatigue and occasional shortness of breath
during physical activity. He also reports feeling pain in his knees when walking and is concerned about his
overall health since he hasn’t been able to exercise regularly. The nurse needs to assess his general health,
heart and lung function, and any underlying conditions affecting his mobility.
Nurse Sarah : “Assalamu alaikum, Mr. Rashid. (1) ____________ today?” (Clue: A greeting question
asking about the patient’s condition)
Mr. Rashid : “Wa alaikum assalam, Nurse Sarah. I’m feeling quite tired and concerned about my
health lately.”
