Chayei Adam - K’lal 140 - The Laws of the Shofar
are authorities who rule that a cracked shofar is [only] posul when it is cracked
along its entire length, even on one side, since this is like pieces of a shofar which
were glued together which is not valid, because the Torah says [to blow] one
shofar. [This is so] even if he heats it and melts it together. If [however] it was
46
mostly cracked, then it depends, for if he doesn’t glue it, it is posul, because
[since it is] mostly [cracked] it’s like it is completely cracked. However, if it was
only partially cracked, it is valid even if it isn’t glued together. Furthermore, that
47
which we permit [using] a shofar which was mostly cracked and reglued, some
say this is true even if it was glued with glue, because since the glue is not visible,
48
it is not like adding a different species. Some say that it is [considered] adding a
different species and is not valid unless it was reglued by melting it and sticking it
49
together. If possible, one should be stringent and invalidate [a shofar if it was]
cracked even a little bit, but under extenuating circumstances, where no other
shofar is available, one may be lenient [and rule] like the authorities who rule that
a shofar which is [only] partially cracked even if it wasn’t glued or if it was mostly
cracked and reglued, even with glue. It appears to me that we only permit it if it is
reglued with glue because it is whole, but if it is tied with a string, it doesn’t help
according to this opinion, for only if it was partially cracked, [then] those who
hold it to be invalid because it will end up cracking completely will hold that a
string helps. 50
]15[ It appears to me that those who are stringent are only stringent if it is a
small crack, but if it is nicked, it is valid according to everyone, for only a crack
grows. 51

shofar and another object. However, if the first 47. The Magid Mishna however maintains
tefach is intact, the sound is considered as that gluing a mostly cracked shofar does not
emanating from it alone. rectify it, but his opinion was rejected by all
other authorities.
46. While the Rosh recommends gluing it
to prevent it from splitting more (see further), 48. Rosh. He argues that since melting the
