RESIDENT AND FAMILY EDUCATION
POLICY
To provide a framework for the provision of education to residents and their families. Hopess
shall provide for a collaborative, interdisciplinary educational process for residents and family
members (supports).
PROCEDURE
1. The educational needs of the resident and family members shall be addressed as part of
the Multidisciplinary Treatment Plan. Areas to be addressed may include, but are not
limited to:
a. Safe and effective use of medication and Potential food-drug interactions
b. Anger and Stress Management skills
c. Communication and Negotiating skills
d. Parenting skills
e. Chemical Dependency and Disease Process Education
f. Community resources
g. Developmental issues
2. An assessment of the resident’s learning needs, cultural, and religious practices
that may affect the health care decisions or understanding and methods of learning
is completed upon admission as part of the Assessment process.
3. Interactive opportunities for teaching are provided using skills groups,
process groups, family therapy and family groups.
4. Discharge planning involves an interactive process with the resident and family
members. Support resources are identified and appropriate referrals are made for
continued care.
5. Written materials are provided on a variety of topics. Additional resources are
provided as indicated.
6. Documentation of the resident’s participation in educational activities will be
documented in the resident’s chart.
