When Vicki and Cindi were little they liked to go swimming
in the Gulf. Actually, they could not swim, but their idea of swimming
consisted of jumping the waves while holding their Dad’s hand. Many
afternoons, at about quitting time, Cindi would call and ask if I would
take them swimming. I would ask her whether the waves were high.
She would stand on the dining room table looking out to the Gulf, and
usually report, “There are no whitecaps, Dad.” I would hurry home
and change into swimming trunks and we would walk the hundred feet
from the front door to the water. They were both good sports about
it. After about a half hour, we would come home. We would turn on

girls. Jean would then dry them and take them in the house and put on
clean clothes. Americans in Ras Tanura had created a small yacht club
down the peninsula on the Tarut Bay side. A few had small sailboats and
several imported motorboats for use in waterskiing. One of the harbor
pilots employed by the company had a hobby of teaching the kids to
swim. Cindi and Vicki learned to swim there.

We purchased an Arabian mare that was white with brown freck-
les. Her name was Mashusha. There was a small hobby farm down the
peninsula created by some of the American employees. She was kept
there. To get there required a ride of several miles on a company bus. I
was disappointed that neither Richard nor Janet showed a great deal of
interest in riding or caring for the horse. After perhaps a year, we sold
the horse. Dogs were not allowed in Saudi Arabia. Some Americans had
smuggled Siamese cats in. As cats will, they had babies. We used to say
that Ras Tanura was the only place in the world where the typical alley
            cat was Siamese.
