on which Janet played. Because she was nearsighted, a pitched ball was
not really in focus to her until the ball was halfway to the plate. Never-
theless, she was a good hitter, which the coach said had to result from
very quick reactions on her part. As parents, we attended all of the sports
games. Jean had never had any real interest in sports, but she attended
the games even when it required a jolting bus ride lasting for over an
hour to get to Dhahran or the better part of three hours if the game was
held in Abqaiq. Each of the kids had two wheel bikes. We tried to teach
Vicki and Cindi to ride in the alley behind our house. Both, naturally,
fell many times. After falling a couple of times, Vicki would come in the
house in tears. Cindi would grit her teeth and keep trying, so she learned
to ride the bike before Vicki did.

Meat was always a problem. I have mentioned that the beef we had
had been trailed to market in Australia, cut up and frozen, and it might
be well over a year before it appeared on the commissary shelves. As
a result, it was quite tasteless. Since Muslims would not handle pork
products, the only way we could obtain them were from cans. You can
appreciate, therefore, why we planted gardens near the house when the
summer heat ended in October and enjoyed the produce in February and
March. Tomatoes were our favorite product. However, the dust storms

Ras Tanura District had 600 American employees and over
4,000 men on the Saudi Riyal payroll. The great majority of these were
Saudi Arabians, but there were also Indians and Palestinians. The Indi-

In the petroleum business, nearly all members in the upper man-
agement levels are one kind of an engineer or another. I was not. It
seemed to me to be important to learn all one could about the petroleum
