breaks that life had brought her. She was cheerful and happy so that
all of my friends really liked and respected her. In our marriage and
throughout my working life she was a partner in the full sense of the
word. She had inherent talent in many areas, although she would be the
last to claim such. Had she been born a generation later, I have no doubt
whatever that she could have become a very successful architect or en-

to be a good mother and a good grandmother command my admiration.
She came to Saudi Arabia with two young children at a time when many
of our friends thought we were crazy to take such a risk. Jean adapted

descendants to have such a marriage partner.

Jean was a close observer of all she tried to do. I have mentioned
how detail oriented she was when she helped design our house. She
also watched her children grow up and was close to them always. She

lem. He took care of that. When they disappointed her, as Richard did
by refusing to brush his teeth, she tried to get him to talk to the dentist
about it. The dentist did some good, but to this day Richard has teeth
problems that date back to his refusal to regularly brush his teeth. Janet
had a foot problem and today she has some sort of problem with one
foot, despite using lifts in her shoes. My point is not to try to point to

worked on everything to give them the best possible chance of success
and happiness in life. Sometimes it’s rather funny. Alice admitted some
years later that her mother had sent her to school with brown bread sand-
wiches in her lunch. Alice was embarrassed at that because she thought
she should have white bread. As a result she would keep her sandwiches
in her lunch box until she actually took a bite out of the sandwich and
then she’d return it to her lunch box.

She was the kind of woman who never considered adultery. She
was loyal to me and her children always. She had high standards of per-
sonal conduct, which she expected everyone to follow.
