of Florence. Alice seemed to have an uncanny sense of direction. She
led us through the crooked streets directly to her favorite gelato store.

Janet drove north into Switzerland through the longest tunnel
I’ve ever seen. The following day we drove across northern France to
Dunkirk. I wanted to see the area from which the British army had been
evacuated in May 1940. It amazed me that there was no monument or
other evidence of the evacuation. Instead there was a huge aluminum
factory stretching along the coast. Disappointing treatment of a major
        event!

From Calais we took the hovercraft to Dover and then proceeded
to London. Our timing was great – the annual show of the Royal Horti-

is near Southampton. Lord Rothschild developed there what I think is

enough to hit it at the peak of bloom. The acres and acres are superbly
landscaped and the plants are superb. We toured southern England and
returned to London. I especially enjoyed the canal tour we took in Lon-
        don.
Alice had to return home, but Janet and I stayed a few days lon-
ger. We especially enjoyed a visit to Chartwell, the country home of
Winston Churchill. We also visited Loder’s Garden, an entire canyon of
azaleas, was in full bloom – great!

In 1995, Jean and I took Janet, Richard and Alice on a two-week
trip to England and Wales. Due to Cindi’s work, she was unable to join
us until the second week and Vicki was also working. We again went
to Exbury Garden in May. This time we were too early for the peak
of display. We drove to Polperro, which our family always enjoys. We

we had no hotel reservation and I asked a gentleman on the street to
recommend one. He not only did so, he led us there in his car because
