that Janet and Richard had gained a great deal from our vacation travels
when we had lived in Saudi Arabia (the other three girls were too young
when the trips were made to remember much of them at a later date). So
we arranged a trip for the boys. At this time Dan was 16, Paul 15, and
Chad 14. They were all bright, good students and good kids.

Richard became our guide in seeing all the sites in London. I
am immensely proud of the love and generosity that Richard showed to
these three boys. He paid for their airfares and he spent three weeks of
his vacation time (which he could have sold back to the Ventura County
for cash) and then spent the three weeks as a well-informed guide for
            these teenage boys and me.

Richard and I took the boys to Buckingham Palace to watch the
changing of the guard, but Chad was sick to his stomach and I took him
back to the hotel, where he slept for several hours. Dan and Paul went to
the Tower of London and sightseeing. I later found that these three had

I had feared that Chad might have appendicitis, in reality it was just
            exhaustion.
Traveling with a group was pretty easy because we were a har-

by having him pay for individual tickets on every subway trip we took,
using his own money. It didn’t work. We bought railroad tickets to visit

On my birthday, the boys took me to a Chinese restaurant for
dinner. It was very kind of them. It was my 70 birthday. I was amazed
