2. A pre-med program required the study of invertebrate and then ver-
tebrate zoology. These courses involved the dissection of a small
shark and a cat by each student. The dissection of the cat was inter-
esting and I was the only one in the class to manage to remove the
cat’s brain without puncturing the covering that surrounded it. How-
ever, these courses involved memorization of the Latin names of
muscles, bones, nerves, etc. Such names had to be subject to instant
recall at any later time. My tendency at the time was to memorize
prior to a test, but thereafter to forget it. Wrong! Just as would be
required in a medical school anatomy course, the name of each part

In the spring of my sophomore year I was elected President of the
Independent Students Association. This was a loosely organized group
of non-Greek letter fraternity and sorority members. We nominated a

deserved to lose and we did.
In the spring of my freshman year some friends who were ac-
tive in debate and public speaking activities urged me to join them in a
college public speaking contest which was held in Cedar City, Utah. I
entered the extemporaneous speaking contest. There were students from
many colleges. Each of us drew a subject for his or her talk from a
hat. We then had 10 minutes to prepare our thoughts and then gave a

Neilson and I entered the debate contest as a team. We placed second.
