My Mother in particular had always taught me to pray for guid-
ance when confronted with a serious problem. I now prayed earnestly,
in silence, for guidance. When the other two couples arrived at the car a
minute or two later, I confessed that I had lost the car keys somewhere.
I asked them to return with me on a sweep of the areas where we had
walked and into the circus tent where we had sat.
It must be realized that the dust in the walk to the circus tent was
several inches thick. This caused the circus to buy and spread sawdust
several inches thick in order to make the walkways more acceptable to
patrons. The idea of walking back through the dust and sawdust and be-

the car for transportation and they thereby felt obligated, the six of us
returned to seek the car keys. We had entered the walkway only a little
ways when I spotted the keys. Nearly 3,000 people had walked through
that dust and sawdust, but I found my own car keys within a couple of

            was good to me.
I found Jean to be fun to be with. We could do simple things,
yet they were uniformly fun. I began taking her on dates to swim in the
Great Salt Lake at Black Rock, we went to movies, to dances at Saltair
and Lagoon and sometimes we simply window shopped down Main
Street. It is obvious that I was “the last of the big spenders,” because we
would usually end our date by going to Snelgrove’s ice cream store on
East South Temple, where we would each get two scoops of great ice
cream in a paper carton for the great sum of 10 cents per carton.

father’s name. I didn’t know, so I asked Jean on the next date. She told
me that her father had died many years before, but that his name was
John Elkins. When I told my Dad, he broke into a big smile. He told me
that John Elkins had been a boyhood friend of his. John’s relatives had
