ous of him because I still thought she was a great gal. The moment we

to be with somebody more interesting.
As my senior year in high school grew to a close, there was one
more big dance. I had enjoyed talking with Jean’s best friend, Betsy
Bradley, and so I asked her. I dated Betsy and found her to be great
fun. I recall that she had to take geometry class at West High in order to
graduate. I bet her that she would not receive an A. She did so and I took
her to the Hotel Utah to a dinner dance as a reward. I spent part of that
summer in Berkeley having two operations on my hand, but we wrote
to each other often. In my freshman year, at the U, I dated various girls,
            but most often Betsy.
In the spring of my freshman year, I met Pauline Gordon. She
was a very bright, pretty girl with an outstanding academic record. She
had been successful in public speaking contests. She was elected to the
Beehive Club, which consisted of the top twelve graduating seniors at
the U based on their academic record, school activities, etc. Pauline was
a senior and I was a freshman, but there was great mutual attraction. We
dated, but I realized that this relationship could never become serious
because I was a Mormon and Pauline was a Jew.
Again I spent some of the summer in Berkeley having opera-
tions on my hand. When I returned home, I took out Betsy Bradley the

late summer I always cut a big bouquet of gladioli from the garden and
presented them to the young lady. This led to complications, because
the night after I had taken Jean out, Betsy visited her at home and im-
mediately knew that I had dated Jean. Fortunately, they had a real, deep
friendship and no enmity grew between them.
Jean had not liked the University of Utah and wasn’t able to get
into the classes she wanted. After the fall quarter, she had transferred
to Utah State at Logan. I began my sophomore year at the U and Jean
was in Logan), which her brother Bob also attended. We had been dat-
ing again for a couple of months, and I realized that I was falling in
