love with this lady. She was smart, had great common sense and was a
joy to be with. I respected her high moral standards in life. During the
winter and the spring, I was in Logan a half dozen times. Twice I was
able to take the family car. The other times I had hitchhiked there and
back. Those were Depression days and it was perfectly normal for fel-
lows going to and from Logan to hitchhike there. People readily picked
up college kids and hitchhiking to Logan was almost as fast as driving
your own car. I did, however, once have the experience of being picked
up by an old farmer who drove not more than 30 miles per hour. Part

ride with somebody else and got there much faster! Another time I was
hitchhiking when George Abbott drove past me. Mr. Abbott was a friend
of my dads and was Utah State Highway Commissioner. He stopped
and asked me with a little wonder, Does your dad know you are hitch-
hiking? I assured him that he did.
When I visited Jean in Logan she was sharing a basement apart-
ment with three other girls. They were all nice girls and I enjoyed talk-
ing with them. Jean and I went to dances and basketball games in Lo-
gan. After our date, I would go to a small house that her brother Bob and
three other fellows were renting. I would undress, push Bob over a bit in
the bed, and sleep like a log. I appreciated his hospitality.
In June, I drove to Logan to bring Jean home. We dated all sum-

parents estate to continue Jean in college if her twin brother Steve and
her younger brother John were to get college educations. Jean got a job
located at the Salt Lake City and County Building but paid for by a bank
that had a title and escrow activity. She worked 5½ days per week for
$50 per month. At that time in Salt Lake, $50 was considered a satisfac-
tory monthly wage.
