counsel which I can honestly say we have followed!
Sunday, December 7, 1941 was both a national tragedy and a
unique, personal problem. Since our marriage we had been living in
Jean’s family home pending its remodeling that was to begin in Janu-
ary. Helen and Stan and their children had moved to their new home
in September. Jean’s aunt Rulah and her younger brother, John, lived
in the upstairs apartment. At about 9 a.m. John ran down the stairs and
announced to us, “The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor.” Both Jean and
I were skeptical since John in his younger days had reported having
killed lions and tigers in the backyard. John insisted this was no joke.
“Turn on your radios” he urged. We did – and heard the terrible news.
We were awestruck. Such a possibility had never entered our heads. I
feared immediately that my idea of going to graduate school in the fall
            was doomed.
The personal problem was that I had awakened with was a feel-
ing of pressure on one side of my neck. It felt as though someone had
placed their hand and were pushing inward. The feeling was entirely
new to me. Finally, I went into the bathroom, stripped to the waist, and
looked for clues. There was no redness or spotting. Then I noticed that

no bones visible; on the other side my collarbone was clearly visible.
At the University of Utah Student Health Center the next day,
the doctor who examined me asked if I had been in an accident. He sug-
gested that I might have punctured the cover of my lung and afterward
the air had leaked upward through the tissues. My brother Sam drove
me to the LDS Hospital. My shoulder and lungs were x-rayed. Steam
packs were applied to my neck and I was given sulfa pills to swallow.
After about 36 hours the swelling disappeared and I was released. No
one had a clue as to why the swelling had occurred.
I telephoned my brother-in-law, Grant Ellis, in Berkeley. He lis-
tened to my explanation of what happened and he suggested that I prob-

diagnostician. A couple of weeks later the swelling reoccurred. I went
to the dentist, who pulled a molar; the swelling soon disappeared, never
to recur. Score one for Grant – and from a distance too!
