backlog. Despite the obvious need, the people working there proceeded
at a leisurely pace. Everyone knew of the backlog but no one seemed to
worry about when or how the work would be done. Hundreds of people
were awaiting evaluation of their job descriptions, but until the clas-

Jean started working at Fort Douglas in January. We normally
met for lunch after I began working there. Usually we “brown bagged
it” on the lawn under the big trees there. I loved it. We were working
48 hours over six days per week so we were very busy. Jean soon won
a promotion to $120 per month. We were proud to be making $270 per
        month between us.
In June, I went back to the University for a day to participate in
the graduation, complete with cap and gown. My Mother and Dad were
very proud that day – Sam graduated from law school, I received my
bachelor’s degree and Sam’s wife, Marie, also graduated.
In August, I received notice from my draft board to report for
military service. Under the rules applicable at the time, fellows married
before Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) were supposed to be deferred.
However, I saw no point in appealing the matter. It seemed that it would
only be a question of a few months before being drafted. I took the phys-
ical exam and was accepted for “Limited Service” beginning September
        1942.
Jean and I wanted a few days together. We managed to borrow
her brother Bob’s coupe (Bob was on active Army duty in Hawaii and
Rulah had the car). We visited Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks. They
were beautiful, but Jean saw only a little of them. She was terribly nau-
