Now seemed like the right time to do so. Ever thrifty, she pointed out
that if we stayed out all night there was no point to paying for a hotel
room. So, we checked out of the hotel and stored our bags. We found a

movie having a double feature. We emerged about 6 a.m. and sat in a
hotel lobby until 7 a.m., which was the earliest check-in time permitted.
We went to our room and slept like logs.
That night we went to the Palladium near Hollywood. We met
Bob Sorbonne and Betsy Bradley, who were engaged at that time (Bob
later became a dentist known for his outstanding abilities). We had a
great time dancing to the music provided by Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra.
It had a skinny young fellow as its singer. His name was Frank Sinatra.
He was unknown at the time, but we thought he had real talent and a
great future. On Sunday, we took the big red train that then ran out to
Long Beach. We attended church with Betsy and Bob. Later they drove

around in the old western town they had recreated.
We rode the Greyhound Bus back to Salt Lake. We left the
spring-like weather in Los Angeles for the snow in Salt Lake. We car-
ried our bags three blocks to 45 East North Temple. I had $4 left in my
wallet. We were very young and had limited money, but we had a great
            time on our honeymoon.
We soon had to move to a tiny apartment at 126 A Street because
Jean’s house was being remodeled. Our apartment had been created on

the kitchen table was of the drop-leaf type, which you had to do to get
            around it.
The war news was dismal. The Allies were losing and retreating
everywhere. The woman with whom Jean had worked at the County
Building was now pregnant and leaving the job. The bank called Jean
