every way.
Alice must have continuously worried about what would hap-
pen to her and the children because of her heart problems. Jean had
a rebellious streak, which caused her mother to send Bob for switch
sticks in the backyard. These she used on Jean. At Christmastime be-
fore Jean turned 10, her mother died. A visitor to the house insisted that
Jean should go upstairs and see her mothers body. Jean resisted, but the
woman insisted. Jean was frightened at the still body and never thereaf-
ter viewed anyone in a casket.
With Alices death in 1930, the grandmother decided that Bob
should live with their aunt Norma, Jean and Steve should go to Denver
where their aunt Helen lived with Stan, and John should remain and
be raised by aunt Rulah. Bob was bitterly unhappy at Normas and he
telephoned his grandmother and begged to return, which she granted.
Rulah therefore took on Bob and John. Helen was pregnant and in Den-
ver she gave birth to Harry. Almost two years later, she gave birth to

ment. They got in trouble in school as well. After two years in Denver,
Helen insisted that Stan quit his job and move to Salt Lake so she could
be near her mother. This was during the Great Depression. Her mother
came over to Denver and packed his car and they made their way to
Salt Lake over a period of days. Stan then sold electrical supplies as an
th
independent contractor. They lived in the old family home on West 5
South.
Jean recalls going to the farmers market to buy things for Hel-
en. In the event that the strawberries, for example, were not to Helens
liking, Jean would take them back, which she disliked exceedingly. A
couple of years later her grandmother died and Helen and Stan and their
