a pony cart to deliver groceries to various customers. My Dad had been
six months younger than John, but had accompanied him on his pony
cart rounds to assist his friend. They had also been in the Mission Home
together, having gone on missions at the same time – Dad to England
and John to Germany. Jean and I were delighted when, a few years ago,
we found a picture of the two standing side by side in the Mission Home
        before they left for Europe.
I had been very attracted to Jean and we dated several times a
week through July and August. About the end of August, at the end of
a date I drove the car up to the parking lot in front of the Utah State
Capitol. It was common for young couples to park there overlooking the
beautiful lights in the valley. In addition, kissing was the order of the
day there. I determined to kiss Jean and put my arm around her and was
about to kiss her when she turned away and said, “I’m not that kind of a
girl.” I’ve rarely been more shocked. I’d never tried to kiss her before,
and I had dated her exclusively all summer long. I had no idea of any-
thing beyond a kiss. To suddenly be refused as though I were suggesting
something highly improper was a shock. I immediately drove her home.
I couldn’t get her home fast enough.
School started at that time. Jean and I already had a date to at-
tend a high school dance party. We triple dated and a girl who was the
date of one of my friends made a big play for me. That was the last date

I attended all the Cadet Hops for West, East, South and Ogden
High as well as their Senior Proms. I had dated the girl who had made
the play for me and made the mistake of asking her, in advance, to all
these dances. We had a great time at the dances. All my friends in our
“gang” attended, we traded dance partners and had a great time kidding
around. After the dance we would usually go to Snelgrove’s in Sugar-
        house and have a milkshake.

upper story. Jean had been selected as a ROTC hostess, which was a
special honor that all of the girls were anxious to have, but only a half-
dozen were selected. She was hostess for A Company of our ROTC
