died in World War I. Trees and shrubs had been planted in the bottom
and on the canyon sides. In the summer there were hundreds of petunias
planted around a small lake. At night the air was perfumed by them. I
loved it.
At that time now long since abandoned the park had grassy

grass was a problem because the hand-powered lawn mower had to be
pushed laterally across the grass on the steep hillside. The men mowing
the lawns wore baseball shoes with spikes in order to retain a footing.
Used in that way the shoes caused blisters on the feet, despite wearing
two pairs of socks. Pain can be a motivator. I took my shoes home and
cut sponge rubber inserts in the shoes out of Mothers kitchen supplies.
By wearing the sponge-based shoes I got no more blisters. The other
fellows soon copied the practice.
My partner and I soon mowed the entire park in 5½ days work.
No previous lawn mower team had ever done the job in less than 6½
days. It was hard work but in a beautiful setting and I enjoyed it. The $4
a day that I earned was considered a good wage at the time.
The fall of 1941 began my senior year at the U. All I needed to
graduate was additional credit hours in any additional subject or sub-
jects. My major and comprehensive test had been completed. Becoming
an attorney had always interested me, but more importantly, it seemed
wise to get some legal background for later use in government and pri-
vate industry in a non-attorney status. So I enrolled in law school. Con-

law school. Subsequent years studies involves specialized phases. The
case study method was utilized in teaching. To me the study of law was
interesting and it taught me an attorneys approach to resolving prob-
lems. However, it bothered me that the whole process often seemed like
hair-splitting (my apologies to attorneys in our family!). That didnt at-
tract me as a career. So, I completed the fall and winter quarters and then
