to continue the medical studies. My brother Gordon was inducted in the
Army as Private First Class so that he was paid Army pay and the Army
paid tuition, books and so forth at Stanford. A real break!

would shower and change clothes before going to the mess hall. The

Eisenhower Jackets. We slept under two blankets.
During this time, I would telephone Jean every Saturday night.
My Sergeants monthly pay was $76 of which $22 was deducted and
the government sent Jean a total of $50 a month. I tried to spend as little
as possible. I restricted myself to $10 a month so the remainder of my
income could be sent to Jean. Most of the $10 was spent in calling her
on the telephone each Saturday night.
One Saturday afternoon we were free, so two of my friends and
I caught a ride in the back of an Army truck and rode down to Santa
Barbara. We found a lady who would let us sleep on cots in her house
that night for $2 each. Sunday morning one of the fellows and I went
to church. He was also a Mormon from Salt Lake. At church, we met a
forest ranger whom my friend had known. The ranger had a wife and
two little kids and they invited us to have Sunday dinner with them. It
was great to have dinner with them and be with a family.
In talking with missionaries at church I found that they were
about to be transferred and were going to give up a little apartment they
had over a garage. It was a nice little place. The rent was $26 per month.
It seemed to me that there would be an opportunity to bring Jean and
Janet to Santa Barbara and I would be able to see them on weekends.
