homes we were interested in, both in the north part of Berkeley. The
more expensive of the two was clearly nicer. It was 1581 San Lorenzo
Avenue, a block north of Solano Avenue. The owner’s wife had died and
he was anxious to be out of the house. There was no washing machine,
but he agreed to let us keep the refrigerator until a replacement was
available after the War. We were able to get a mortgage of $3,600 but we
had to come up with a bit over $2,200 plus closing costs. We had saved
our money, but we were $1,000 short. Laurine and Grant very kindly
loaned us the $1,000 and we were able to move into our own home.
After looking for a job for a week I got a call from Betty Thom-

the various Army installations there in order to accomplish the survey. I
was given a small booklet outlining the techniques of wage surveys and
went to Sacramento. The folks from the Army installations received me
very kindly – no one ever asked me what experience I had had in such
work! The survey went well and I enjoyed Sacramento, which somehow
seemed homey with its big trees, downtown and general atmosphere. I
then went on to Stockton and did the same thing. All went well.
Soon Major Kautz came to San Francisco for meetings with our
