                  RELIGION




                  In Religious Education (RE) you will learn about what people
                  believe, why they believe and how these beliefs influence
                  their own lives, the lives of others and the world around us.
                  You will explore how many religions, particularly Christian
                  denominations, have shaped the Ireland you live in today.


                  What will I learn in Religion class?
                  Some of the things you will learn include:
                  >  About at the major world religions
                  >  How different communities of faith organise themselves: their leaders, celebrations, forms of
                    worship and guidelines about their members’ behaviour.  How communities of faith have worked
                    with the poor and marginalized in society to relieve their suffering and ease their burdens.
                  >  The different religious and non-religious ways of trying to understand the world.
                  >  How religious beliefs shape some ideas and laws and how to look at societies’ problems from and
                    ethical and moral point of view.
                  >  Visit religious centres and places of worship.
                  >  Listen to speakers from different organisations and religions.
                  >  Work on your own, but also in pairs and in groups and use a textbook.
                  >  Encouraged to ask questions, debate topics, explore issues, delve into and examine issues at a
                    deeper from which you will form an informed decision.


                  Who would this subject suit?
                  Religion is a subject that is suitable for all students.  It is a subject that you will carry forward into your
                  life after school and aid you to develop your own moral compass.  Religion classes can deepen one’s
                  faith and form a closer relationship with the Divine.  Religion for both believers and non-believers is
                  an important subject as it allows you to see other people’s point of view and look at problems from
                  an ethical viewpoint. Religion will help you understand how people make decisions, how people are
                  inspired by their religious beliefs, how conflict happens and how it can be solved.  Religion will help
                  you solve problems and thinking for yourself when working with others.  Religion helps to when plan
                  to travel to or live-in other countries.


                  What is the Junior Cycle Exam like?
                  In Junior Certificate Home Economics, you will be examined by:
                  >  A written examination - you will also have a written exam.
                  >  Classroom Based Assessment (CBA) – Students will complete CBAs in Religion.
                    These are assessed by their subject teachers and take place in second and third year.

                  Type of Homework/Projects/Assignments related to Religion.
                  Homework is varied from written work, class presentations, debates, field trips, class tests, group and
                  project work based on class content.
