The First Date

y first real date stands out. I was with Tanya Pietak, a grade 5 through 13 classmate from public school. During those

Myears I had never had a true girlfriend. The Central Secondary School graduation event was set for November 1957,

after everyone had graduated from high school and went their separate ways. It turned out that both of us had already
started medical school in Kingston and since neither of us had a boyfriend or girlfriend, we decided that it made sense for

both of us to return to Hamilton to go to the senior prom together. The prom took place just south of Hamilton in Mount

Hope. It was the first time my father ever let me drive our car, unless he was in it. While nothing more came of what was

my first date the event felt significant. A small but important milestone in my life.
