Early School Days in East York

rom 1946 to 1948, we lived at 487 Plains Road in East York, where I attended grades two, three, and four at Danforth
FPark School (taking the three years in two). I vividly remember walking to school across busy streets like Woodbine

Avenue, long before car dropoffs became common. This was also when my love for trains and streetcars began. My mother

and I frequently rode the old streetcars along Danforth Road to downtown Toronto. We were not far from the rationing
of gas and tires in World War II and as such many of our trips to and from Guelph or Kingston would be by train. One

unforgettable experience was visiting the burned remains of the SS Noronic after it had been towed to Hamilton from

Toronto Harbor after a devastating fire. He had lost his home and business to a fire in Ayton and so was always very careful

in this area. However, he still had a fascination with fires.
