Victory Gardens and Family Traditions

uring the war, my paternal grandparents, John Matthew (JM) and Nellie, lived in Guelph, where they maintained

Da large victory garden to support the war effort. The photo shows the office of the dry cleaning plant. JM and my

father, JR at top left. Their home was always filled with jars of canned goods. I still remember the distinctive scent of sage,

which Nellie dried and sold under the “Card & Company” brand. Their industriousness made a lasting impression on me.
Another memory of Guelph is JM taking me off to Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) and Ontario Veterinary College

(OVC) as there were lots of animals and barns around to visit. This reminds me of University of Saskatchewan when we

first moved to Saskatoon. OAC and OVC eventually evolved into the University of Guelph.
