6.4 Airport operations and airport safety

Everything moves on an aerodrome or airport, so be vigilant!

Many aircraft disasters with loss of life could have been avoided if the pilots and

air traffic controllers had had the right procedures and the right equipment
available.

Ground radars, which report the position and movements of aircraft on the

maneuvering area, can help the air traffic controller in situations where poor

visibility makes it impossible to have a visual overview of the traffic on the

maneuvering area.

When we are flying VFR, the weather is usually good, and if we maintain

sufficient visibility, we can avoid many dangerous situations.

Before we taxi over a stop line, we look ahead – to both sides – and it is a good

idea to announce loudly “BOTH FINALS CLEAR” or something similar, so that you
have a fixed procedure for looking out.

This applies regardless of whether you are on a grass runway or a larger airport

with air traffic control service.

Before you start flying at a foreign airport, it is important to thoroughly

familiarize yourself with the structure of the airport. That is, how the runways

and taxiways are laid out. Are there special areas for warming up (Run Up)? Are

there standard taxi routes for departure on the runways?
