Seventeen
-At seventeen
She thought she knew
What real life was about
She'd had her share
Of ups and downs The fighting and the struggles
She'd manage now no doubt She'd lived through all her life
She left the house she'd grown in Were over now and she'd go on
The memories and tears No pain or fear or strife
Walked bravely to the station So as the journey went on
To start her new career She clearly felt less fear
Nearing her destination
The army life had beckoned her She shed a lonesome tear
A means to leave her past
Secure accommodation She stepped out on the platform
Her freedom hers at last Looking for the gate
Her life was in her suitcase Spied the army uniform
The few things she held dear Approached, secured her fate
Everything she needed Climbed into the waiting bus
She'd packed without a tear Looked at others there
All looked apprehensive
No one had gone with her No eye contact just tears
To wish her a farewell
She stood there on the platform At seventeen she'd left behind
Alone feeling the chill The years of pain and hurt
It was frosty that October To serve for her own country
She remembers it so well And rise above the dirt
At seventeen the world was hers She breathed in deep
To carry her from hell And steeled herself
To face her tough new choice
The train pulled to the platform To finally become someone
She boarded it and sat And find her own sweet voice
Staring though the window
Realizing that Jane Shields (C)
She'd never see these sights again
She felt her feelings stir
To know this chapter of her life
Was gone forever more
