As a coach to new speakers, I have a four-point checklist for my speakers
to review before making and presentation. While I developed this list for
platform presentations, it is also just as effective for personal or social
conversations.
It can help change pontificating into meaningful dialogue.
The four questions to ask before any communication are:
1) What is my message or belief (what am I trying to convey)?
2) What is the basis for my message (what qualifies me to talk about
it)?
3) Why is it important to the listener?
4) What action do I want my listener to take?
The most important of the questions is #3. Why is it important?
Maybe it’s time to let other people talk until we have something to offer
them.
A wise person once said, “It is better to be silent and have people wonder if
you are a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”
