Speak as You Would to an Individual
Speaking to groups is no different from speaking to an individual, yet
many of us drastically change our tone and demeanor when speaking to
groups of people.
One effective exercise I have found to help speakers who don’t use a
natural style of speaking is to role play. I ask them how they would
address a group of high school seniors they were responsible for
during a class trip to Florida.
It is amazing to see the passion in their belief in the importance of
following rules. They are firm and authoritative in their delivery. They
are sincere in their concern and detailed in their direction.
Their attitude conveys much more than their words. Their message is
crystal clear. That is the way to speak to a group. With a message in
which you believe, a passion in your belief that it is important, and
natural style that lets your attitude shine through.
