Say this calmly and quickly and the audience is no longer concerned
with the humor of the story but with the message. In effect we are
saying, “I’m telling you this not so much to be funny as much as to
support my theme. If you find it humorous, that’s great. But its primary
purpose is to support my major message.”
The best humor is self-deprecating humor. It is always okay to poke fun
at ourselves…our size, our age, our habits….anything that allows us to
laugh at ourselves aids in building relationships with a group.
