Morbidity and mortality among under-five year children still high and still remains a challenge in the developing
countries. Appropriate and prompt health care seeking by caregivers can reduce morbidity and mortality among
under-five year children. This study was conducted to determine the health care seeking behavior of caregivers on
common childhood illness of under five-year children and to identify the associated factors. This study used
descriptive correlational design with cross sectional approach. Sample were selected using purposive sampling
technique. 122 caregiver of children age 0–59 months have filled out the semi-structured questionnaire. This study
found that 56,5% caregiver sought healthcare for their children. The others were used traditional medicine, visited
the pharmacy directly, used self-treatment, and did nothing. Educational status and socioeconomic status of the
caregiver, perceived severity of illness, and previous experience of similar illnesses were found had significant
association with health-seeking behavior of caregivers. Some of caregivers did not seek appropriate health care for
under-five childhood illnesses. Health promotion strategies and effective health policy interventions are needed to
enhance health care seeking behaviour among the caregivers.
