PROJECT PROFILE
NEW YORK CITY
HOUSING AUTHORITY
In 2007, SMS was commissioned to furnish and install CCTV surveillance systems in six of
the City’s housing developments.
In 2009, SMS was commissioned to perform a feasibility study and develop a multi-point
mesh RF network to support CCTV and access control for a typical NYC Housing project.
The Wireless Network Concept is based on the recommendations of the NYCHA and its
goals to create a wireless system to serve the NYCHA’s present and future needs. The sys-
tem architecture was to support not only the existing camera deployment, but in addition oth-
er technologies including access control and building automation. These functions could then
be controlled from the new Security Operations Center (SOC) to be located in the Admin-
istration Building. The architecture would further support a complete mobile data net-
work for the NYCHA police and other agency operations. Additionally the data network
would provide operational functionality from the City's Mobile Command Vehicle. This
entire system architecture was designed to be modular and scalable for future needs.
Subsequently, SMS was commissioned to evaluate the feasibility of installing a fiber back-
bone throughout the multi building facility to support an enterprise solution.
Based on the above engineering studies, in 2010, SMS completed a pilot program for NYCHA
utilizing Genetec as a solution to support both CCTV and Access Control. This pilot pro-
gram resulted in this design being accepted as the new standard for security throughout NY-
CHA’s facilities.
In 2012, SMS was awarded a $27 million, multi-year contract to design and build an
enterprise solution in 29 housing development sites, including 200 buildings with over 1,500
cameras integrated with building access control.
