The second strategy uses NK receptors that recognize stress-
induced proteins on cells. When the NK cells detect these stress
proteins, an activating signal is generated and the NK cells kill the
stressed cells (Fig. 19.7). Cells infected by viruses and intracellular
bacteria, as well as some cancer cells, express these stress proteins.
