Laboratory Skills
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Clean and/or maintain laboratory equipment including binocular
microscope, centrifuge, and refractometer
• Recognize common ectoparasites and common internal parasite
ova
• Conduct a gross examination of and prepare feces for analysis
• Assist in blood collection, handling, and shipment to a reference
laboratory
• Use in‐house hematology analyzer to run a complete blood count
(CBC)
• Prepare and stain a usable blood smear
• Complete packed cell volume (PCV) and plasma protein tests
• Use in‐house analyzers to conduct blood chemistries and electrolyte
determinations
• Use assorted serologic test kits
• Assist with urine sample collection techniques
• Prepare urine samples for sediment microscopic examination, urine
specific gravity, and urine chemistries
• Assist with sample collection for culture and sensitivity, prepare a
Gram stain
• Set up equipment and materials needed to complete a necropsy
• Properly pack samples for shipment to a reference laboratory
