Hot fomentation
This is a method of applying heat to an area that cannot be poulticed. It is usually done for 20
minutes, 2 or 3 times a day and is particularly useful for encouraging abscesses to burst, e.g.
for a strangles abscess.
• Half fill a bucket with hand-hot water.
• Add a double handful of Epsom salts.
• Immerse a small towel in the water.
• Squeeze out the excess, fold the towel in four and apply to the abscess.
• Repeat these steps every few minutes.
• Top the bucket up with boiling water to keep the temperature warm.
