Commercially available packs that can be warmed in hot water or the microwave are another
way of applying heat.

This is useful for punctures and bruises to the sole of the foot.
• Pick out the hoof and scrub it clean.
• Add a handful of Epsom salts to a bowl or half-filled bucket of warm water. The
temperature should be similar to that of a warm bath.
• Place the hoof in the bucket and keep it immersed for 10–15 minutes (Figure 3.20).
• Add more hot water as the temperature cools. Take care not to scald the horse.
• Perform the procedure twice daily.
• Dry the leg thoroughly afterwards.
