Cut splice: this involves the splicing together of the ends of each of two ropes into the corresponding
standing parts of the other.
Unlay the strands of both ends for about 20cm (4in) and apply whipping to their ends. Offer up the
two ends together and establish the required length of the cut (figure 44.1), then tuck in the same way
as for an eye splice, by taking the central strand and tucking it under any strand of the standing part of
the second rope, against the lay. Then tuck the left-hand strand, passing it to the left of the first strand,
over the strand of the standing part under which the first strand has been tucked, and under the next
strand of the standing part. Then take the third strand around the other side of the standing part and
tuck it back under the remaining strand of the standing part. This completes the full tuck. Now
continue to tuck over one, under one with the three strands, against the lay, until you have completed
three full tucks (figure 44.2). You can now cut the tails and repeat the process, with the right-hand
end being spliced into the left-hand standing part.
